I have a Potterton Suprima, connected to a Potterton EP2002 Programmer (Under boiler in Kitchen) and potterton room stat (Lounge).

I am looking for more flexibility in control and after some advice on the best products available. I have the following requirements:

1) Although currently I program times for Heating and, they cannot be timed independently. I would like to control them separately in terms of time.

2) I would prefer to be able to program daily as we sometimes go away at the weekend and would like the heating to come on say just a Sunday afternoon, so the house in warm when we come home. However the current controller requires it to then be on Saturday as well.

3) Last winter we had frozen pipes, which happened whilst we were at work due to extreme temp drop. I would like some override that triggers the heating on if the house gets below a certain temperature.

I know that the EP6002 will do 1) and 2). I would ideally like to get all 3, if possible. I think what I want and not sure if it is available. A programmer with flexibility and a room stat which knows the current temperature and if it drops too low will trigger the heating. Obviously I don't want it so that the heating is constantly on.

Sorry it's long, but any advice would be good!

If your happy with the EP6002 then stick with that, its personal preferance, like you say it'll do the job.
All you need linked into the controls is a pipe thermostat which will bring heat on if temp gets below the temp. you set it to i.e 5*c. (To protect system pipework)
Depending on where the boiler is positioned you could put a frost stat on the system also, for example if the boiler is in a cold room/area . Its basicly like a room stat but specifically for frost protection

I currently don't have the EP6002. I was thinking about it, but looking at other options that may do the same job, plus additional functions.

I am not totally convinced our room stat works properly, so was thinking about replacing that anyway!

Don't understand this bit. :? Are you talking about timing heating and hot water separately, or what?

Just re-read statement 1). Sorry for the confusion.

I am saying that currently my CH/HW ON/OFF are controlled on separate switches. However when they are programmed to come on/off at set time, the time is applied to both. So in answer to your question yes I am talking about timing CH and HW separately.

Thanks for making it clearer.

In the winter, is it possible to turn the heating on by itself? Or does turning the heating on also turn the HW on. I'm not talking about the times being the same.

You can have Just HW or just CH or both
OK, that makes life fairly simple.

You say that you want more options for when the heating comes on and better temperature control. The easiest way of doing this is to install a programmable thermostat in place of the existing stat. The EP2002 would be retained just to control the HW times.

The best programmable stat available at the moment is probably the Honeywell CM907 (wired) or CM927 (wireless). Both have separate settings for each day of the week and up to six settings per day. Provided your existing thermostat has three wires connected, you can use the wired version. Otherwise the wireless version will be easier to install.
