I know these are simple controlers, but I can't for the life of me get it to switch on the central heating without switching on the hot water . How do I run the heating only? Feel free to make me look foolish! Many thanks in advance.

If you have a gravity H/W circuit ,Then you can't.
There is a selector on the reverse of the programmer if you have fully pumped system.
Then we will tell you and show you how you can find out. This presupposes I have some technical knowledge about heating systems. not so, I have no idea about gravity or fully pumped.

Gravity circulation relies on the fact that hot water is lighter than cold water. So the hot water will naturally rise up the pipe from the boiler to the Hot water cylinder. It travels through a coil in the cylinder and heats up the water in the cylinder. As a result the water in the coil cools down and consequently drops down the return pipe back to the boiler.
Pumped circulation is as the name suggests.
Have a look around your boiler and hot water cylinder and see if you have something like any of these. If you do you have fully pumped system

Another way of checking is to count the number of water pipes connected to the boiler. A pumped system will have two; a gravity will have three or four.
OKThank you, I will have a looksee!
