please help - baxi solo 2 40 pf - fan? UPDATE - STRANGE!!

Hi all, need help desperately.

The fan in this boiler has been getting noisy recently, then today, it just won't spin.

It's a recon fan that I fitted about 2 years ago now, and it's done the same as the old one - the top parts have been scoring against the metal casing.

In the last few days I've had to grease it up to get it to spin ok. But now it won't have it. This morning the top of the fan assembly was very hot - to me that suggests power's trying to get it to start, but it won't.

If you turn the boiler on, the pump runs, and the fan clicks on, but only moves slightly round then stops. There's a "buzzing" noise that sounds like power is getting to it, but it won't spin. I've removed it to clean it, but I can feel a strange, magnetic kind of resistance and it doesn't really spin freely.

Am I right in thinking that this needs another fan again? It's not going to be the PCB is it?

Please help, am desperate, and cold!

technically should be a RGI replacing the fan on any unit however not the PCB, you definitly need a RGI for this job

Guys, appreciate the advice and that you're saying the right thing.

I've replaced this fan before, and got a corgi chap round to check everything over.

Unfortunately, my financial situation doesn't allow me to call an engineer round to diagnose and replace - I'm not even sure how to pay for the fan at the moment, and may have to take out a small loan - obviously I dont want to, but I need hot water.

Would really appreciate your advice on this - I would get a corgi (gas safe) guy round, but I'm in a desperate situation so don't have a choice!

YOU NEED A NEW FAN ITS SEIZED BUT HAS POWER CAUSING IT TO HEAT UP.
THE RESISTANCE YOU FEEL IS THE ELECTRIC FIELD CAUSED BY THE COIL BEING ENERGISED BUT DOESNT HAVE ENOUGH TO MAKE IT SPIN

You've also explained why i can feel the resistance, I was wondering, and did think it felt magnetic.

I don't think the fan is actually seized, as it will turn, it just has a "springy" feel to it, so I guess it's the coil on top that is at fault. Shame you can't buy them separately, would be cheaper than a whole fan assembly, but that's life!

New fan it is - just got to find a way to pay for it now...

Ok, even more confused now!

I've just tried to turn the boiler on, and to my great surprise, with a very noisy start up, it's started working!

Could hear the fan rattling, and eventually it got up enough speed to fire up. Am guessing all that cleaning and bending of the top spindles worked (a bit)!

Does that suggest the coil is ok? Could the fan survive now that it's not fouling the casing so badly? Got to leave it running so the mrs can have a shower!

Thoughts please? Could it last another day? I'd rather buy a recon fan at about £50 and wait for delivery than a new one at about £120 that I can get tomorrow.

What do I do!?!

Where am I going on holiday?!! I wish. I haven't been on holiday since I was a kid - over 15 years! If you read what I've said, you'll see that I state I'm skint.

Unfortunately I don't charge £ridiculous per hour.

Would like to see how you manage not knowing how you can pay the bills each month.

As stated, I can't afford to get someone out, I don't even know where I'm going to get the money to pay for the fan I need.

You do have a choice, TURN THE BOILER OFF!!! and wait until you have funds to pay a RGI, as mistakes can be life threatening.

Phone around for a price. They are quite reasonable.
