Strong Gas Smell after new Gas Work on Boiler HELP Please!

How long does it take to cap the meter off, or at worst to cut in a compression cap in the evening and replace it with coupler in the morning? No wonder these gas boys are reported to be earning so much doller that they have to stay all night rather than doing that. I bet it took longer to unroll his sleeping bag, let alone drive home to get the thing that it would to cap the meter.

Did he charge you half time for the night hours or did you pay the full rate?

expertgasman. I appreciate your concern and it is noted. I will start to get this checked out. I must admit I didn't think that any leak was acceptable. I am all too aware of the Putney explosion as well as the more recent ones. BUT I, not being a gas man, took it in good faith that the 3.5mb was an acceptable loss in a system.

I will talk with Gas Safe.

I haven't had his bill yet, BUT I would not be expecting to pay for the hassle of the last few days as this was down to his workmanship.

Irrespective he has said any safety related matters are down to 'his account'

sorry to go on about this, Ian, but it is REALLY odd that he is so "conscientious" that he goes home for his sleeping bag to avoid capping off the meter, and yet he ignores the fact that he CANNOT leave the 3.5mb leak. He has no powers of discretion over this, and, maybe annoyingly for you, neither have you. He is leaving himself wide open to investigation by documenting and leaving the leak.

My understanding is that he CAN leave it IF there is no smell of gas.

I interpret that as meaning no smell of gas by the occupiers. I have a good sense of smell of food but not of gas.

I would always check to see where it is leaking but he choose not to it seems.

IF he confirmed the leak was on the pipework then he CANNOT leave it as leaks are NOT permitted on pipework ( only on connected appliances ).

Unidentified leaks on pipework are very unusual.

Perhaps Dr drivel has a Corgi card after all

If it wasn't so serious, this thread would be seriously funny.

NO. Once a smell has been reportd, there is NO allowance. Very annoying if, say, there was a massive and obvious leak on a gas applince, which you sorted, and you are left with a 0.5mb drop, somewhere else. Technically, you cannot leave the tiny escape.

Spoke to Technical at Gas Safe and they confirmed that if he isolated the appliance and there is still a leak he cannot leave it. There must be no leaks on the Pipework. As some have said.

Hence the dealings with a pizza establishment in NW3?

This is a very comical thread. I'm half expecting the RGI to plan another 'sleepover' and take up squatters rights.

Or say it was all a big trick........he is really their long lost son who has tracked down his parents and cunningly tricked them into believing he is a incompetant RGI to introduce himself.....

Homeowner - ' your useless! get out of my house'!
RGI - ' no you don't understand!'
H - ' I do - your feckin useless'
RGI - 'That hurts coming from my own dad...'
H - ' Oh my god - I'm your dad!!'

Then the eastenders theme tune..........well thats my opinion on the story, seems about as logical as the truth....

He's older than me!!

After he had finished tightness testing your missis, I hope he wasn't doing all this sniffing around her washing basket

I think that we have just found the long lost script to the last in the Carry On series...... Carry On Gasman.

I used to know a painter who used to sleep over, but only in empty houses... His Mrs had chucked him out and he was such a pillock that no one else would give him a bed......OP, your gasmans name wasn't Frank was it?

So am I right in saying that you have had to pay an RGI for four days and nights straight work?

How much has that cost???????

Its RGI's like this that give the rest of us a bad name, could have re-piped the whole house in half the time. And what was he thinking, its not going to explode if he's there!

At Agiles rates, thats 80hours @ £84.00

£6720.00 plus VAT.

or

£9600-00 plus VAT at Pimlico Plumbers rates.

Seems to me that the RGI has said Permissable leak when he should have been saying, permissable pressure drop.
A Permissable pressure drop would account for absorption in the meter/pipework but once theres a smell reported, that goes out the window and NO drop is allowed. Lets all face it, any RGI worth his salt ain't gonna leave a system with a leak on it or a 4mb drop whatever the cause.

Also it is the last person to work on the installation who is accountable for ANY defects including those on existing pipework/appliances not just their own work.
