Tarmac drive is on its way out. Would it work to lay block pavers on top of sand screed on top of the old tarmac assuming new edgings are laid on sand/cement in the normal way?? I can't think of any obviouse problem but maybe there is. There is a slight fall on the drive.

Any thoughts would be welcome.......cheers

whats your horse called?
Ho Ho.......I'm in stitches  Now how about adding your reasoning in this matter so that we may all benefit from your undoubted expertise. My thought is that old tarmac must be as sound as any compacted hardcore as a base but as I said in my initial post I am keen to get other opinions......isn't this what the forum is all about??

Tarmac is not porous enough and so the sand base will get too soggy

i've only laid my own block paving so im no expert.. but 20years ago i laid a block paving drive 70ft by 12 at my house i had a concrete drive down i asked the same question and was told by every one not to lay it on the concrete it would lift or sink,,, 20 years latter it still as good as the day it was laid it as two transit vans parked on it as well as a car ,,, i had never laid a block paving before and never had cause to lay again l may be lucky ill never know

Brill.....that's what I was after......first hand experience rather than a regurgitated text book answer.....thanks

OK, that's all right then, lets re-write standard building practice on the strength of one DIY job done by one poster in a limited internet forum.

Lets suppose another poster, 8888888, says that his job done 2 years ago has more troughs than pig farm, would that be equally convincing on how to do it?

Well it's more constructive than you've managed......if I want standard building practice I can reference that at my leisure......what forums are all about is sharing experiences.....right!!

And another thought for you to ponder....no text book would suggest laying a tarmac drive as a base for pavers but it don't mean it doesn't do the job

Sub base material should be made up from suitable inert products and tarmac is definitely not suitable.

Thanks for your comment but why? Why would it not work ? Tarmac planings have been used for years as a substitute for hardcore

You seem to know it all already, why are you even on here asking?
Does anyone ever answer a straight question on this bleedin forum.........all you get are smart arse replies or criptic comments.......we can all play that game.
Now be good un's and lets have a bit of considered and sensible input
