New gas main

Down our road we are having a nice new yellow plastic gas main. They have now pretty much finished. However last night I saw my new connection and wondered if it was suitable

The old steel pipe was around 2" dia yet the new one seems about 20mm

Is this correct as I wondered if with a gas cooker and combi boiler on it may not be able to supply the demand?

This picture shows they have reduced the internal dia by inserting one pipe into the steel and a reducing connector for the new section. Thereby I guess it is a good 30% smaller

How big is your cooker and boiler ?.
The new yellow pipes are under higher pressure than you think and the guy who re lit and cleared air from your boiler and cooker would have ensured that all was correct.

Are you absolutely certain that he would have? I've never seen a 28mm pipe run on a reconnect after an extended meter reposition.

It is quite common to do pipe insertions like that and you will get a perfectly adequate supply. Inserting saves digging up vast lengths of ground. Trust the experts.

Thanks to all concerned.

Firstly I do trust these experts. I have been in contact with them several times as they hit the water main twice and left us without water for a while twice. Then when it was reconnected we lost 50% pressure so they had to dig it up again to find the blockage.

Then when they did connect the new gas main they had inadvertently missed us off the new circuit so they had to dig it all up again. Hence the pictures.

So with the front looking like the Somme we have had a few chats and I know because of these delays time was running short and they needed to close the job off and as I am not a gas man I was worried they may be like surgeons who simply bury their mistakes

However they were all really nice guy's and worked themselves like dogs so all in all I don't have a bad word to say against them..

Nice to see a 'proper' job done, where the pipe is marked to ensure it is inserted fully into the fitting and not just trusted to luck!

Perhaps if they were more careful in the first place they wouldn't have
to work like dogs. Mind over matter.

Just like the guys who turned up to connect an extra meter at our flats
and proceeded to disconnect the existing meter. Then spent the next few hours trying to reconnect the supply they have needlessly disconnected.
Talk about creating work for themselves. It was only the fact that I actually
asked them what they were doing at the old meter pipe that prompted them. They didn't seem to know what they had been sent to do.

The OP seems very accommodating to these guys who broke water mains twice and left him without gas!

The plastic gas pipe is very smooth on the inside and although smaller has a very low resistance to gas flow.

So the plastic pipe is still fine as a supply pipe even though its smaller ( in most cases ! ).

Another part of the reason is that the street mains is at a higher pressure than the regulated 21 mB supplied to the gas meter.

Its not relevant to me what the street supply pressure is and it seems to vary according to the street and the demand on the supply. I have seen cases on a very cold Sunday when the street pressure has gone down to about 15 mB which is on the verge of being dangerous in the home.
