Help - unsure about what to use.. painting new metal railing

Hi,

I need to paint a balcony railing that's a real mix of metals (all new and unpainted).

1. Cold-galvanised metal profiles
2. Hot- galvanised metal strips (a little bit of chips in the galv layer at edges) - these have some flexibility to move (over a 500 mm length they can bend a couple of mm in the middle)
3. Thin iron bars
4. Galvanised nuts and bolts
5. Welds - unfortunately, in difficult places and not neat

As soon as I complete the welding (not major) on a portion, I spray cold glav paint on the iron bars and on the welds.

So - my dilemma.... do I assume that the zinc paint is as good as galv and use Hammerite direct to galv ?
Should I prime first with a non-iron primer, then Hammerite direct to galv ?
Should I prepare the surface another way first ?
Or use another type of paint ?

Am looking to delay the onset of rust as much as I can....

Red Oxide over the zinc, then the Hammerite.

Zinc phosphate primer and a good quality exterior grade gloss is preferable to Hammerite which dries/skins far too quickly (especially at this time of year) in my opinion. Red oxide primer does a similar job to the zinc phosphate.

You say these railings are new and unpainted, if this is correct have the galvanised sections been treated with a mordant solution, if not no paint system will bond.

Or use a Calcium Plumbate primer, either way the new Galv will need doing first.

should all be "de-greased" first with brush cleaner.

Hate hammerite, as Mr H says a good quality exterior gloss such as sikkens xd and the zinc phosphate primer


and don't skip the u/c

Correct, the railings are new and untreated. That's why I thought of painting with Hammerite for galvanized directly - is that not possible ?

If I go ahead and paint with a red oxide primer first, do I need to do anything besides clean/degrease ?

Have you guys got a secret stash of calcium plumbate? As I recall, it was banned shortly after I began painting in the early 90's.

Hammerite is just yuck for several reasons. Its gloopy and doesn't flow because it starts to set up really quickly. It also goes flat over time. You have to buy cellulose thinners if you want to thin it to aid flow.

De-grease, prime, undercoat and gloss.

A paint mitten can be useful for railings, would certainly speed things up.

Calcium plumbate - magnet lead paint- Walpamur wall paint - tub of snowcem powder - and a lot of Brolacs Got `em all
