Thanks in advance for any advice given.

My kitchen lights stopped working....

Basically I have 4x 240v Halogen down lights (all with 20w lamps) in my kitchen, also part of the same circuit is 2 mains pendant fittings. These operate from a dimmer switch. These lights I believe lead on to the external wall fan, so all part of the same circuit. The kitchen lights are part of an 3 year old home extension so there not connected with the older part of the house. (Each of the mains down lights was a good quality fitting, not cheap.)

Ive visually checked the connections behind the dimmer switch and the fan switch and all appear to be connected fine. Ive also changed all the lamps for new ones. The CU had tripped out so thats back on as well. Thats about the extent of my knowledge on what I can check.

Any further ideas on what to check next or what could be causing the problem? Again, thanks in advance for any advice.
Cheers.

I am assuming the MCB at the CU is staying on now (not disconnecting)

It is possible that one of the lamps has blown and damaged the dimmer switch. Easiest test it to replace the dimmer with a standard switch.

Other than that you are probably looking at a wiring fault (open circuit) as a result of high current flow during a short circuit condition (perhaps caused by a blown lamp) This will require some diagnostics with a multimeter or similar instrument. May be best to replace the dimmer with a switch first then come back on here if that fails to yield the problem.

Thanks for the reply Sparkticus, the MCB is staying on and not tripping out. Ive tried all the lamps from the from the kitchen in another area of my home and one of the 4 lamps was dead, so pretty sure its been a blown lamp. Will try replacing the switch in the day light on friday. Watch this space as i may need help rewiring the new switch...cheers.

Take a photograph or make a drawing and use tape of the current positions of each cable in other words which terminal each goes into - otherwise buy a multi meter when you pick up the double gang switch. ;)
