Are you able to see the ground from the top of your pedestal.??

Only yesterday I was changing a consumer unit for a 60-year old ex-engineer.

I removed the fuse that was marked "downstairs lighting" to see exactly which lights were fed from this fuse.
He said "oh look, the upstairs lights are still working".

Now bear in mind that he was an ex-engineer (not electrical). This was the house that he has lived in for the last 20 years.

So, I from my experience in the field, I never assume that anybody knows anything.

Except for you, of course, who knows everything about everything.

And I assume that anybody capable of independent living and using the internet etc would have the sense to check the CU if half their lights stopped working.

There's a lot of people out there with little sense or little knowledge.

Fairly often some people don't even know where their 'fuse box' is, let alone what it does.

It's quite common to turn up to a job where something is not working and all is needed is a trip resetting or an isolator turning on.

Fan switches marked fan and switched fused spurs in kitchens above appliances are classic examples.

The commonest example is a lamp blowing, knocking out the mcb. Unfortunately some people don't know what to do when something they take for granted is not working.

Unfortunately we will never get to know what happened as the OP has been frightened off - sadly this seems to be happening quite a lot.
