I have a switch and a socket, both have 2 live wires, one neutral, and one yellow and green.

I am not sure what to do with the second live wire, what it is for, where it goes ect... Any Advice?

I should mention, both the switch and socket are currently wired correctly, afraid to go live with them because of this extra red wire with exposed copper, it is the only thing holding us back from turning on the house... Really really need advice please!

I can't tell anything from your description.

Could we have a picture of the switch and the socket.

Is the extra red wire on its own or another cable with the black and earth cut?

There are 2 red wires, 1 black, and one green and yellow.

Into the switch, 1 red, 1 black, and 1 g/y with 1 red left over

Into the socket, 1 red, 1 black, and 1 g/y with 1 red left over

Ive checked other sockets and switches and none have this extra red wire.

I can provide a picture tomorrow.

The second red wire isn't connected to anything, it's just floating around behind the switch/socket looking lonely.

Maybe some history... Had a bloke in today who was there to fit some light fixtures and swap some single sockets into doubles.

He got the first room upstairs done, no problems, lights and sockets work great.

Heads into the second bedroom, swaps the lights/sockets... no leccy.

He decides to have a look round to see if there is a break in any of the lines.

So he checks the switch ( which was hanging from the wall ) and sees the red neutral and yellow green connected, then spies the lonely red wire hiding behind, so he pops around to the other side of the wall to where a socket is in the exact same state.

He's not sure if it was a looped wire that was cut and never re-connected or if it's an old dead line, or if it's faulty ect.

So he decides its not safe to proceed with the rest of the lights and sockets/swtiches, until he can find out what this red live wire is for, why its there, what its doing.

I did some reading and I suspect it was a looped wire which was cut and never reconnected.

We bought the house in a dire state, most of the sockets and switches are fine, connected ect. but these two were left dangling and we're not sure why...probably because of this extra live wire. We've NOT had all of the electricity on in the house at once. Our consumer unit consists of.... 6 or 7 circuits/fuses one for the lights, one for the plugs, one for the boiler, one for the cooker, a spare, and one other that I am not sure at the moment what is for.....

its all a bit confusing tbh

What does this switch operate the socket outlet? or a light?
Is the socket outlet a standard 13A or is it different in any way?

The light switch is in room B, the socket is in room A.

The light switch in room B operates the overhead light.

The socket in room A... well is the very closest to the the consumer unit and the meter, main electric switch

They are on a supporting wall, switch on one side in room b, socket on the other side, room a....

As far as I know, they are standard 13 amp...nothing special single socket, single switch white plastic, made within the last 5-10 years, recessed into the wall.

So is the bogus red also at the light point from switch?
and is the bogus red also at the CU for socket?
I guess these are two different cables are the CSA different or same?
Are the reds paired or singles?
