Hi all, please excuse me if this has been asked a million times already..

Does the air vent need to be at the opposite end of the room to the backboiler?

It is a good size vent (over 6")and been in place/use for years but I am thinking of moving it closer to the boiler. (In the middle of re-rendering and plastering etc)

Would it be ok to move to within 2mtrs of the backboiler OR has it got to be at the other end of the room so as to create a flow across the entire room?

TIA Kev..

The closer to the boiler the better - prevents draughts across the room.

The manufacturer's instructions and the relevant British Standards must be followed.

Thanks for the replies.. Appreciated.

Glad to hear that it will be fine closer to the boiler as it was creating a draft across the room but I wasn`t sure if that was what it was meant to do.
Have a goodun in 2012..

prob gonna shoot myself down here, and it doent matter if i prove to be an idiot, it wont be the first time, but rather than go and look at a set of MI for a BBU, i dont remember it ever giving a vent position, other than saying the vent cannot be fitted inside the fireplace opening and should be adequately sized and fitted as per BS5440-2, dont ever remember an actual position listed, theory dictated high level vent to outside as dense cold air would fall and help push hot air up, and it also acted as an escape route for smoke, but H&S directive says if there are 2 options when doig work always take the safer, and anyone who has ever used a core cutter will agree it is far safer to fit it low down than from up a ladder

If i could always put them at high level with vents pointing upwards the cold air mixes with the hot air and dont feel the draught as you do with a low level vent .
To minimise any draught use a black hole vent bit dearer but better

Thanks for the decrypt.. Obvious when you know

Been doing some reading and it seems that kirkgas is right in that aslong as its adequate and not in the fireplace it can be placed as to minimize draughts.

gas112 I take it you mean only the internal vents pointing up

Its a good idea but I dont fancy using a core drill up a ladder, I`m afraid that I`ll have a broken wrist for christmas as it is..

How do you prevent invasion if I have to leave off any kind of insect grill?

I`m planning on 5" core with no baffle giving me 100cm.

Thanks all for replies.. Much appreciated..
