the top part of the radiator is cold. I have tried bleeding it at the top right hand vent but no air comes out when I loosen the screw. Can you help?

How tall is it? what is the voulume? sealed or open vented system? It may just need balancing the flow and return to allow full circulation to the rad.

Hi pete
All I can tell you, it is 6ft high by 2ft wide. No idea of the volume. It has a bottom valve on each side. The right one does turn the rad off/on. As you can see, plumbing is not my fortae!

with most radiators the flow & return pipe can be connected at either end of rad and still work ok. however with some of the more decorative rads the instructions will say flow must enter from a particular side or rad will never work correctly.perhaps you have flow & return on wrong ends. do you have any instructions for rad?

sounds as if you need more water in the system, if you open the air release you dont have any water getting to the rad, it that simple, however, the reason the water isnt getting to the rad the system needs topped up or you have a blockage (unlikely as one side blocking will stop it heating but the rad will fill from the other side) do you know if you have a sealed system (there is a pressure guage on the boiler) or open vented (you will have a top up plastic tank in the loft) is the top of the rad higher than everything else? if you have a sealed system, if so then top up pressure via braided hose at boiler
