morning all

i have a valliant turbomax 828 boiler which is about 6 years old. ive noticed in the last few weeks that every now and then the boiler sounds like its trying to switch between settings. the display will keep switching between s.31 & s.02 for up to 5 mins even if the heating is off and the hot water is not in use.
s.01 = pump running - pre ignition (heating operation)
s.31 = summer mode (heating control knob in off position)

the boiler hasnt made these noises before so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what the cause may be?

the green light on the display? No, its not on.

on a separate note, i want to install a room thermostat, i have the RT but Ive noticed on the boiler that i need to connect the cables to 3,4,5 on the system board but 3 & 4 are connected to each other. any idea why this would be and if i can disconnect this to install the RT?

You remove the link between 3 and 4 when you install the room stat.

thanks, and I can use a standard electrical cable to connect the RT ?
If you are connecting straight into the boiler you should use heat resistant cable. Any plumbers merchant and many larger DIY stores sell it - usually Tower brand.

Have you got the Vaillant clock fitted in the boiler fascia?

I knew I should have paid the extra for the non-removable adhesive!

Most probable it's a duff clock. Does the S.2/S.31 cycle happen in an 'off' time? If so try turning the heating control fully anti-clockwise and then see if it still attempts to start. If that stops it, you can confidently replace the clock.
