Hi, I'm running windows 7 and at the moment use Norton but am concerned that it may be slowing my pc down?? Ive been told there are a lot of free security's on the market that are just as good as Norton, but every free one Ive looked at don't seem to cover banking and shopping online, anyone know what to go for?? or should i pay for something different than Norton??

I agree with woody - every techie I know uses AVG personally.
I have setup dozens of PC's and laptops for friends and family and always ensure I install AVG (Often after uninstalling an out of date copy of Norton - and removing the virus's it did not spot - which usually result in people thinking I have performed major surgery on the thing)
In my opinion it's not just the best free anti virus (for personal use) it is the best Personal Anti Virus solution regardless of cost.

Just remember to set it so that the database is updated at least once a day (or more so) and schedule full computer scans at least once a week.

Don`t forget to use a good anti malware program in conjunction with your a/v.
I use Avira as my a/v and malwarebytes as my anti spy/malware program

Yes it does(as does Avira), sorry I didn`t make myself clear in my post.
I think it`s important to have a standalone anti-malware program such as malwarebytes installed, no need to run it on startup, but periodically update it then run it in safe mode to have a look for anything that your a/v missed, it can be an eye opener!
Better not keep all your internet security eggs in one basket.

AVG is antivirus and antispyware
Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) covers all spyware and malware that the definitions are updated to.
You do NOT need to run routine scans on Safe Mode, it is just a waste of time doing reboots.

and have downloaded Microsoft security essentials and malwarbytes both the free options, the thing i don't understand that is the malwarbytes operating all the time as there doesn't seem to be an option to set it to scan on a regular time (say every day at 2pm) i have know problem turning a scan on manually but this seems a bit of a pain in the a** can anyone help?? or should i go for the free AVG as someone on here said it has its own malware

Hiya gemshan1, the free version of MBAM is just a stand alone scanner or what you would call an on demand scanner ie its manually operated. If you pay for the pro version that is on all the time and you can schedule scans etc etc.
Don't worry though as MSE has an inbuilt spyware scanner that is on all the time and can be scheduled to scan. View MBAM as a really really good back up.
My personal preference is not to go with AVG at all. I would have installed Avast over MSE as well but it doesn't matter. Most decent free AV's now come with a spyware scanner built in as standard so no need to worry.
