why do you need mechanical fixings in these boards?

You dont have to use them but,

BCO in our area check they have been fitted, normally one fixing in each corner ( or near ) so as they state, if there was a fire in your house the boards wont fall of the wall and knock you out.
They also check full line of adhesive top and bottom of boards, again to help prevent fire spread.
In reality, if the house was on fire, your not going to hang around waiting for the boards to part with the wall.

I did a solid line round the sockets, top and bottom and between boards. No metal fixing though, I'll remember the tip to get out if it catches fire.
