I am in the process of tiling a bathroom and hall with 20mm limestone tiles 560mm x random lengths on to ply over timber floorboards using weber.set rapid spf white adhesive what size trowel notch should i use, the tiles are ribbed on the back.

x - mas'g tiles have ribbed backs so to ensure complete contact with adhesive when in situ these ribs must be filled with adhesive BEFORE the tiles are pressed into position. Failure to butter the backs of the tiles might (will) allow only the tops of the ribs to touch the adhesive spead on the floor. Yep, I know the tiles will be pressed down but that's no guarantee that the whole of the rear of the tile will be in contact.

Tip to buttering: make a pile of upside down tiles near to where you're working, apply the adhesive to the floor with your notched trowel, with the plain edge of your trowel apply adhesive to top tile on pile ... ensure complete coverage of all the valleys between the ribs then with the trowel plain edge 'scrape off' excess adhesive, lay tile in position and press home.

Why scrape off excess? Your aim is only to fill the valleys on the back of the tile so there's complete adhesive coverage ... no air gaps under the tiles resulting in possible loose tiles later.
