Does everyone do this or is it just me? You know when you are working in someone's house and you are going up and down the stairs bringing in tools or materials. or maybe you are desperately trying to divert their attention away from the tin of paint you have just knocked over, do you hum or whistle a tune that bears no resemblance to anything you have ever heard - just a jumble of random notes infact.

Yes, occasionally. Always a jumble of notes, but usually when I'm out walking.

One has a habit of shouting out the name of a very early girlfriend (Mavis Enderby qv) and if I realise the mrs is in the room I try to cover it up by humming or singing something out loud by Morrissey.

Doesn't matter which one, the mrs thinks all his songs are completely off the wall, so she just thinks it's part of the lyrics.

I suppose I'm fairly lucky, in that my partner shares the same name as the first girl I ever truly fell in love with. We were both 16 at the time. I'd just gone up to the 6th form and she was in the 5th form. Luckily I had A level Art on a Monday afternoon and had to sit in on the 5th forms Art lesson. We spied each other over the crowded classroom. She smiled and I smiled back, but still it took me almost 2 months to pluck up the courage to ask her out. Ilkeston Fair was on at the time and I asked her if she fancied going up the fair with me and she said that she was meeting her friends at the Waltzer at half seven, and hoped I'd be there too (I was there at 7 just to be sure) We met and had a great night. Fell in love with her over the weeks and months that followed. Sadly we split up just after I'd gone on to college (almost 2 yrs later) Broke my heart, and I pined for months. Even years later, my heart would miss a beat whenever I saw her.
Doesn't bother me now though (well after almost 40 yrs I think I've gotten over her) . My present partner and I were fated to be together, but that story of love, subterfuge and intrigue, is for another thread at another time. (If ever I believe in fate, it's with my partner)

Anyway, back to the original theme..... I whistle all the time at work. Even walking down the street, I'll whistle a tune. Could be something I've heard on the radio, or an old classic song. I've been told off at work for whistling, (my partner has just told me off for whistling along with the music at the end of Heartbreak Ridge( on TV at the moment) )

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! You can't leave it there, having whetted our appetites for a good old-fashioned love story.

We need chapter 2!!
