I am draining, to replace the diverter, and I've always wondered, and almost come very close to finding out, if it's safe to remove the cover to the erm hot area. It has two clips at the bottom. Inside through the spyhole, I can see a heat exchanger which sits above the flame.

I just want to see so that all the stuff I read on here can make more sense.

Is there anything funny going on in here, when the boiler is off, and switched off at the mains. Any pressure, or is it filled with fluid or anything (I imagine the fluild is inside the heat exchanger that sits above the flame).

The panel you wish to remove,I believe, is sealed from the living area/house so should not be removed without the ability to test the seal is remade when refitted.

Thanks.

Now that I have stripped the rest of it down, it is beginning to make sense.
I have the PRV, diverter motor, filler-loop NRV, and the rattly plastic non-return valve all exposed. I can also finally see where the "bicycle pump" connector is..

Safe to remove - yes, in that if the boiler is off there won't be any dangerous things inside.
But - NOT safe to just shove the cover back on and hope all is well.

Therefore you should not remove it, and if you do, you will need to have an RGI visit and ensure it has been correctly fitted etc.

Thanks. Thankfully all the things I am/was interested in, are below that part of the boiler anyway.

I had seen photos on here of leaking/rotten heat exchangers and wouldn't have minded taking a look, but I won't bother. Is it sealed because of the burning flame and carbon monoxide emissions or something ? I was worried it was filled with water or something unexpected but anyway I got my bits done below there.

Anyway how's this for a crapp first time experience: the non-return valve (for the filler loop) that I ordered is back to front (flows the wrong way) and I didn't realise 'til I tried to fill the system.

And, the diverter service kit doesn't seem to be fittable.

but, the good news is that for now it's humming along beautifully, instead of rattling away like before. I cleaned up the rattly non-return-valve on the end of the hot water heat exchanger (I think that's what it is).
