Something that makes me hot under the coller is how we changed our road signs, the worst case being for hills, 1:4 easy for all to understand, every 4 foot you go up or down 1 foot, or every 4 metres up or down 1 metre, i was never top of the class in maths, just average, i do not understand 12%on an incline, 12% of what????

Simplest calc ever:

Old expression: 1 : 4

Convert to percentage by doing this sum: 1 / 4 x 100

IE : 25%.

Your 12% = 1 : 8.2xxxx

12% of what????

12% of Vertical.

If we take vertical as 90 degrees from the horizontal, 12% of vertical would be 10.9 degrees from vertical...........I don't think so

Indeed, it's 12% of 45 degrees.

12% of 45 degrees how do you work that out ?

Or that 45 degrees equates to 100% ? 100% of what ....360 degrees ?
according to you diagram 360 degrees equals 800% ?????

Yes, perhaps that was the wrong way to word that.

Anyway, the image answers all, if a 12% grade confuses you after that, look up the formula.

I must agree that the new percentage measurement means little to me. I much prefer the old system as I find that much easier to visualise, but then again I suppose that's because I'm old.

I'm sure our highly competent government departments made the change for a very good reason. (Sarcastic comment alert.)

Btw, I love the thread title!

or radians you choose !
I think Crossplies are better - particularly Dunlop Grounhogs . ...........................................................................I think Crossplies are better - particularly Dunlop Groundhogs

If your laying drains to maguires rule where the pipe diameter is 100mm divided by 2.5 = 40 thus 1:40.

So converting that to a gradient percentage = 2.5%
You can then input the 2.5 into a gradient laser levels input setting and the level does the rest and the pipe laying is a doodle and precise.

The OP is talking about driving a car not laying drains.
And as for all this mental arithmetic to see what the gradient is!
You should be concentrating on your driving not doing calculus in your head FFS!
Go back to the British way of driving in Britain! **** the EU! (again!)

Isnt this 12 in 100...if you get 1:4 whats the problem
