The original implication was you could claim additional JSA for being an alcoholic/drug user. - You can't

Your doctor/DWP medical assessment might put you IB if you are an alcoholic/drug user which agrees does pay higher than JSA. However the claimant is likely to have other issues that are the cause of the incapacity claim being successful - i.e depression or other mental health concerns/

There are functioning alcoholics who work and don't claim benefits.

Er no it wasn't. You just intrepeted it wrong. And jumped in with all guns blazing.

Who do you work for? Another desk jockey I suppose on an overpaid government salary.

What did single people do before benefits.

Most of them moved back home, or stayed with friends.

Unemployment benefits were first instituted in 1911

Well I didn't know that!

In what city ?

Wikipedia - United Kingdom

History and etymology
Unemployment benefits were first instituted in 1911. Ten years later over two million people were relying on the payments, as the United Kingdom experienced economic hardship after World War I.
Unemployment benefit is commonly referred to as "the dole"; to receive the benefit is to be "on the dole". "Dole" here is an archaic expression meaning "one's allotted portion", from the synonymous Old English word dāl.

I know a guy on jsa who's also an alcoholic. He gets an extra £80 quid per week just because he's got a drink problem.

Seems quite a clear statement.
Private sector mostly but did have a year with the DWP, and to be fair it probably was overpaid for the work involved

It's also worth noting that ESA /Benefits are not related to what you have contributed. So you can put 20k plus a year into the system for donkey's years, and you still qualify for exactly the same benefits as if you'd put nothing in. Actually you'd be worse off, as you'd be on contributions based ESA as opposed to income based ESA, so you wouldn't get free prescriptions etc !!
