Blown toaster -> plug socket no longer working

Hi all

I was making some toast and the toaster went pop. Now the double plug socket in the kitchen isn't working. All the other sockets are fine and the fuse box looks ok. Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it? Is there a fuse in the actual socket that needs replacing? Any help appreciated.

There isn't (usually) a fuse in a double socket, but there should be one in the plug attached to the toaster - have you checked that one? IS it both sides of the double socket don't work or just one? You say the fuse box "looks" OK - are they fuses or switches? If switches they're all presumably in the same position; fuses can only be checked with a meter, not by visual check alone.

I 've tried a different appliance in both sockets and neither work. The fuse box has switches. All the switches are up with the exception of one switch which is half way - but that one is labelled 'electric shower'. We don't have an electric shower and I'm not even sure there's a fuse in there, and i think it has probably always been in that position.

It's strange the fuse box has all the switches up still. Is it possible the toaster blowing has damaged the wall socket somehow and needs replacing?

That half way switch is probably an RCD (does it have a test button on it?)

Push that switch all the way down and then push it up to the on position.

Then try your rogue socket again.

That did the trick - much appreciated! It's possible the 'electric shower' switch was labelled incorrectly I guess. Glad it's sorted, thanks again!

No idea. I've never had any electrical issues since I moved into this house over 5 years ago; today's toaster incident has been the first time something like this has happened. Im not going to analyse it too much - ust it's working again!

I bet it was the old cooker radial which someone has put a socket on to the end of.

When the CU was swapped the 'electrician' couldn't find what that 6mil cable did, so just guessed and labelled it shower.

RF, are you suggesting that an 'electrician' would reconnect a random cable without knowing what it did? How would (s)he measure loop impedance without finding the other end of the circuit? tut tut...

I wouldn't do that and I'm not even a "proper" electrician...
