If you are asking about those specific markings, I would say they tell the contractors what to do. It appears that they have replaced an old lamp post with a new one so most likely some reference to where the supply comes from and goes to and where the new post should be mounted in relation to the old one. Also it appears they have put a warning down to tell the contractors that a Cable TV line passes in front of the posts.

If you are asking in general, then I would assume there is no code as such but that each council will have their own system which they explain to contractors.

I rather suspect that was a 'mis-click' when she (I assume that 'Marg' is probably a 'she', but maybe incorrectly!) signed up. The profile has now been changed to indicate UK, she has told us that she is in England and the photo certainly looks very much like the UK (rather than US).

Kind Regards, John

when i asked it said "unknown country" although the picture looks UK , I was under the impression that was just an example found on the internet

hello all

.

They mean someone is going to , on has, dug up the footpath/road and these markings tell the contractor where the services are in the footpath.

Sometimes see different colours for different services.

In the UK standards are likely to be issued by HAUC.

The markings would have been done after scanning the area with a CAT to locate the underground services, usually stats are supplie dby all the utilities but these are often out of date and inacurate.
By the looks of the picture a new street lighting column has been planted awaiting service transfer from the DNO.
