Type of sleeving for a gas pipe passing through a wall

We are having our hob connected to outside propane lpg. We have sleeved the copper pipe where it passes through the outside wall with a short length of waterproof hose & sealed the hose where the end edge is on the outside, (all recommended by guidance on the web). We called a GasSafe engineer to connect the gas. He said the sleeving should also be made of metal. Is he just pumping up his estimate or do regulations state it must be metal sleeving through walls? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should be metallic to mechanically protect the gas pipe from any falling debris within cavity, a seal should be made on the sleeve internally and externally unsealed, this would allow for any leaks in the pipe to go outside, rather than internally or within cavity.

Thank you very much for your quick and very helpful reply. The house is old and has 18" granite exterior walls but I think they are of cavity type )

it doesn't have to be metal it can be plastic, I normally use waste pipe, the sleeve is more there to prevent a leak inside the wall filling the cavity which is why it's sealed on the inside only & to stop the copper from corrosion

your installer is wrong in saying it must be metal, although it may be easier to use copper one size bigger, but it needs to be able to contain gas so I wouldn't consider hose pipe a suitable material to use

CBF is right.

PVc, PE, Copper, steel etc are suitable.

Bamboo, hose pipe and straws are not.

Tell your installer to read his books

I have found out the walls are solid granite, not cavity walls does this make any difference?

But I imagine it must have been very difficult to drill as Granite is about 9 on the Mor scale!

Presume the same applies when gas pipe in running through an internal wall...only question is, should the sleeve be sealed around both outer edges? wall is a solid 9" brick wall...

Ah...makes sense...stupid questio. maybe...but what does one seal the pipe with?? expanding foam? Silicone? especially made horrendously expensive pipe sealing grommets...

Dont worry...im not installing a gas pipe...im installing a pipe that happens to be fitted in the same manner as one that could be used to carry gas if a gas safe were to test it and apply gas to it..

Said gas safe happens to be on hols at present

If it were to carry gas though, id be sure to use a non flamable, not setting mastic. Thanks
