Which brand of paint for mist coat on new plaster?

Hi, i was under the impression that for a mist coat on new plaster i should use 'cheap matt emulsion' diluted half-ish with water.

The other day i was in B&Q and i proceeded to put 2x 20 litre tubs of B&Q own brand 'matt emulsion' (tick) which came in an orange tub and was about £15 per tub, which i thought was 'cheap' (tick)

So now i had the 'cheap matt emulsion' in my trolley, to double check that what i had is correct i asked an employee if the paint was suitable to be diluted and used as a mist coat on new, untouched plaster, he said something along the lines of 'not a cat in hells chance, i promise you there is no way it will work, this stuff will though' as he pointed to the £40 for 10 litres stuff, which admittedly did mention on the back that it could be diluted, whereas the home brand stuff did not.

So was this guy right or wrong? if he was right, i cannot justify paying £40 a tub, so what brand can i use? i would like specifics if possible as the last advice i got got me nowhere ('cheap matt emulsion'), which was not from this site by the way

I used Wickes trade matt and done a 3/4 to 1/4 water.

Painted newly plastered ceilings on Friday and gave 2 coats of above. Then 2 coats undiluted.

Generally B&Q staff don't know their arse from their elbow. I don't use their paint but you could get dulux supermatt or anything labelled 'contract' matt but i'm sure a B&Q matt emulsion would have been fine. Most of the major brands do a contract matt including Albany and Gliddens that i have used. 50% dilution is a bit much, generally depending on the thickness of the paint you water it down by 20-30%

I kind of knew the staff were useless, knowing no more about diy than a McDonalds worker knows about fine dining! but at the end of the day i could not take the chance, so thank you, your advice is greatly appreciated.

The important thing with mist coating is to use non-vinyl matt. Paints labelled 'contract matt' are usually OK for this, regardless of price. You don't need to use anything fancy.

Cheapest and best I've used for mist coating is Leyland Super Leytex watered down appropriately. (Despite the name it contains no vinyl/latex etc!)

Cheaper matt is fine to use just don't need watering down as much that's all.
