Loud banging noises coming from new flat roof extension

Sounds like the GRP can't cope with the thermal movement of the deck. Its why it fails so often. And no, it doesn't last longer than proper felt.

That is almost certainly the cause, unlike felt if you are laying GRP then you need to build a strong deck and use osb3 not ply.

The theory behind the system is that the correct catalyst is added to the right amount of resin, over catalysing makes the fibreglass brittle as it sets.So as your roof expands and retracts the coating now is very brittle and it struggles to cope with the expansion .The system does not fail when installed correctly this sounds like a installation problem, however I don't think you will get any redress as its not leaking

It is nice to see that someone else is having trouble with a noisy flat roof. I thought I was alone. We have recently built an extension with a flat roof and decided to get Everest to fit a fibreglass roof. Whenever the sun comes out, very loud bangs occur in the walls and ceiling. It eventually settles, but starts up again when the sun goes down again. The noise is so loud that it gives us a fright when it starts and makes the dog go mad barking. I am now waiting for the manager from Everest and their surveyor to call soon. I will let you know what they say.

It could very well be as suggested, delamination, or if the roofs have been changed to warm roof construction, a fitter in our area places 4x2 timbers to the perimeter with 100mm celotex inbetween, then a floating decking only fixed at the edges.
We did have to renew a glass fibre roof last year that had delaminated, the wind took the whole covering of.

I had the extension built 2 years ago and opted for fibre glass instead of felt roofing because it has a longer life span.Trouble is i am getting the most unbelievably loud banging noises coming from it.The manufacturers ,Topseal, have been of little help and I cant find much on the net.
Apparently its to do with different expansion and contraction between the wooden structure and the fibre glass as it heats and cools down. Now i dont know whether my roof is at risk but what i do know is that if i ever choose to sell this house i may have problem doing so because of the noise.I just wonder if anyone has any experience of this kind of roofing and any suggestions
Hi. Have you had any luck with this problem? I have exactly the same noise issue, and the supplier so far has not been able to fix it. The noise is incredible inside the house, but not so bad on the roof itself. It is all caused by changes in temperature.

Hi. I also have an Everest roof, fitted in 2010, and have the same problem. they have visited several times but don't seem to know what the answer is. They have tried a few things, but nothing has worked. What have they suggested to you? Does the manager come from the St Albans depot?

spoke to a technician from Topseal

 They don't have any.

Exactly where are you with this problem, then? My supplier is still trying to fix it, so I am prepared to give them a bit longer, but as I now find others with the same problem and no cure, I am more concerned than I was. We need an understanding of the problem, and a cure.
Do you feel that you understand the problem, because I don't.
Thanks

Its quite simple, GRP doesn't have the thermal movement ability of most flat roof systems, the deck has more. When one moves at a diferent speed to the other, you get noise. Same as when an old house creaks in the evening, its contracting due to cooling.

I know of no remedy, all you can do is try what has been suggested eg with the extra weight.topseal I presume only warranty cover is for water ingress.

avoiding water ingress is the main factor of course, but to someone who has little or no knowledge of building industry each loud bang sounds like the roof is giving way albeit gradually
Hello donmaico, I am having the same noise issues and my roof was painted white yesterday in the hope that this would fix the problem.
Have you had any luck in resolving the problem?
Is your roof with Everest? I have to say that they are trying very hard to fix the noise issue, but we have just had an incredibly irritating February and we really need a solution.
I have always been amazed by the loudness of the noise, and you expect some damage, but Everest opened up the roof and there wasn't any. The noise continues through to the late evening, so it isn't just confined to the sun being out.
Thanks

Hi BrianDIY
Everest told me that there is someone in Sussex with the same problem, so that could be you. They have opened up the roof, relaid the decking and the grp cover, tried venting, and yesterday painted the roof white. Have you had any success yet?

Hi donmaico
Two weeks ago Everest painted the roof white. Unfortuantely we still have the same problem, with loud noises. The noise occurs during daylight and darkness, and is obviously caused by temperature changes. I have never figured out why the noise can be so loud, and what actually makes the noise. It can be like someone running over the roof.
I think Everest have run out of ideas.
Have you any success?
Does anyone with this problem have a plan for moving forward and getting it resolved?
