A farmer friend of mine is making some kind of steel frame that will hold drums of oil etc this base will raise these drums about 2ft off the ground.

He has been told (by frame manufacturer) he needs to dig 6 holes 500mm x500mm x500mm to make the foundations to take the "legs". That is a lot of concrete!

Can the amount of concrete be reduced by adding rubble / bricks into the holes and if so what would be a safe amount to add?

That would not be a lot of concrete; 0.125m^3 per hole.

Mixing it with rubble and broken brick would only weaken the mix.

That totals up to <2 tonne for all 6 "foundations" - what's the problem ?

If he's that mean why not even bother with footings; simply tie the frame legs to some straw bales.

I'm sure the framing company won't mind since any guarantee obligation they might feel inclined to provide immediately becomes null and void.

I hope this farmer don't skimp on the meat and veg too

:) No, it's just that there is a lot of bricks and rubble available from the small wall that was knocked down to site this project - more waste not, want not!
