Electric UFH under carpet on off peak

A customer wants me to fit under floor heating in there hallway under carpet, but on an economy 10 supply. I don't think this is going to work as the time it takes to warm up, I think it should be on constantly and switched using the thermostat control? Right, or wrong?

Correct. Economy 7/10 for heating is designed for storage radiators etc where the heat is built up over night and released during the day.

It's pointless for underfloor mat/loose wire systems (eg Warmup) as teh floor would only be warm between 11pm and 6:30am. That type of underfloor system is not designed for space heating, only to warm your tooties.

Economy 10 is typically used for electric only installations using radiators and a system like THIS

It will still receive cheaper lecky during the off peak times, but will also stay warm during the peak times.

Depending on original design of course but in the main first job is dig up floor and lay insulation then the heating mat and then the surface finish. It does take a long time to warm and cool and is only suitable for where a home is heated 24/7 and would also need some other form of heating. The problem is there is no control as to heat output only energy input so you can easy in spring and autumn end up heating a house which does not require it.

In a bathroom underfloor heating does dry the floors but in a wet room the cooling effect of the shower water means it takes at least an hour to dry the floor which is about 15 minutes quicker then without the heating which clearly is no real advantage.

To fit underfloor heating upstairs where there is no real need to install massive amounts of insulation works far better. My son has installed underfloor heating in the bedrooms and it does make the floor warm to walk on. However it is not electric and he does still have radiators in the room.

Ask them if they would consider lagging their radiators.

If theyre having carpet you may as well put the heating mat under the celotex insulation.
