Strip lights go out when I turn on the saw

Okay, thanks for the info. A chap from UKPN coming next week to fit said gadget to keep a track of the problems. I hope it shows up, and not like taking the car to a mechanic and it doesn't play up.
Any update yet?

Kind Regards, John

The only update (not really worthwhile) is that the guy canme on friday to fit the voltage logging device and it is now busy logging the voltage for 7-10 days. I hope the problem is captured as he says it only samples every two minutes.

Thanks. From what you have described, I wouldn't have thought it would be difficult for the logger to pick up the problem. It would probably be sensible for you to make sure that some substantial (but not ridiculous!)_ loads are switched on for periods whilst the logging is going on, in case the problem is largely due to serious voltage drops under load.

Keep us posted!

Hi John, it was a week of normal electricity consumption and the logger has picked something up though it has been taken away to analyse. I phoned UKPN yesterday and they acknowledge a problem (didn't say what) and apparently they are sending something in the post. I don't know how this is eventually going to translate into a repair though.

I['ve now had the chance to speak to the engineer again who seems to be using the shot-gun approach to solving the problem. Some people have changed the phase over further up the road and he is waiting to get access to the local transformer that is located inside an Anglian Water compound. He also remarked the cable is 32mm and that may have been "okay" at the time it was installed but likely that more loads have been placed on it since. He's coming to plug in the monitoring unit again to see if anything has changed since the above alterations.. (as little as it is). I asked him to send over the chart if he could get this info.

Thanks. All that presumably indicates that they do at least acknowledge that there is a problem. Keep us posted!

I take that back - just heard a voice mail from sometime today saying the engineer has now arranged access with the water firm to get access to their property that has the transformer in - He's coming back Thursday to take some measurements (or whatever else can be done?!?!) and re-fit the voltage recorder.

Feedback from UKPN is that any changes they did make still hadn't solved the problem, but he called the lines people in, they came over and swapped us onto another phase (same as the neighbour on the other side) and now it all seems to be working okay. Though he later sent me a voice mail saying the circuit wasn't fed from where he thought, and that this new info puts a different slant on the problem. With all the wind I think they'll be upto their necks in work for the time being!

The way the pole out the front looks it could be the next victim...

Thanks. It sounds as if we have not got to the end of this story yet, so please continue to keep us posted!

A further update. I've now received a letter stating they'll do work to upgrade the overhead main feeding the property. That's all the detail there is really, so time will tell what actually this translates into.
