have a new plug in flow meter so checked the input off most off my led bulbs
the findings on some was quite surprising
now the ones with aluminium castings are fairly close to rated values although this could be pure coincidence
and when you have the same bulbs the higher input watts tends to mean higher output but not always
heres my findings not scientific but interesting

2x1.2rated2=1.7w
4x 2.5rated 1=2.9 2=2.1 and 1=1.6w
4x4w rated 1=2.3 and 3= 1.5w
4x4w rated 1=4.4 and 3= 4.2w[metal]
1x7w rated [toolstation]=6.8w[metal]
3x7w rated 1=6.1 and 2=6.3w[metal]
3x10w rated 1=8.1 1=8.3 1=8.8w[metal

now apart from the toolstation at 240v all the rest [metal] are 100-240v so seems you have compromises in efficiency to cover a large voltage range as the 4w at 1.5w are nearly if not as bright as the metal ones at 4+w

so from my list the 1.2and 2.5w bulbs [line one and two]are not as good as the 4w [line 3]running at 1.5w giving out around 50-80% more light per watt

Not very interesting , led quality varies greatly, some I've bought don't last more than a few months when they should last years.Buying cheap led's has prooved false economy so far.

Which? magazine have just done a survey of LED lamps which suggests that many will not last for as long as they claim. It cannot be too definitive, however, as they haven't been available for as long as they claim to last. Also, they are still relatively expensive.

I'll wait to see if their price drops.

Had so many failures with various makes of these, I now get mine from CEF.....top price but no failures yet!
John :)

Cheap ones won't last anywhere near the quoted times and will often use a lot more gas than it says on the tin. They also get hot and might catch fire, which is a bugg*r. So I would not buy cheap ones. Especially anything with ebay or China in the title.

I'm assuming that LED downlighter bulbs don't take out the fuse when they blow? I have a large stock of standard GU10s that I'm working my way through. Will change to LED when all used.

Getting a dab hand at putting new wire in my lighting fuse.

That's a fair point. I'd still avoid the really cheap Chinese ones from ebay though.

There are long-lasting, safe and reliable alternatives to these LED things.
They are called incandescent bulbs and you can still get them - 40/60/100W.
They are bright immediately you turn them on, and last longer than LEDs, they don't catch fire and are far cheaper to produce.

Ah, but our masters in Brussels tell us not to use them.

Do I care?

It’s easy to blame Brussels, but our own politicians happily agree to this.

Which is right, shows they are not luddites stuck in the steam age.

Our politicians are like poodles sucking up to both Brussels and Washington.

I don't disagree with the advent of fluorescent bulbs or LEDs but, given the choice, I would have made them optional rather than mandatory.

People would never buy them, just like there are to many stupid people that think carpet makes good floor insulation.

My house is almost 100% LED now. I don't give a toss about Brussels, just my leccy bill. Which is significantly less than it was this time 12 months ago.

OF course the irony is that it's getting very difficult to buy regular incandescent bulbs but I can still easilly buy rough service bulbs which as I understand it are slightly less efficient than regular incandescents.
