''A New Form of Heating From Germany''

My local rag, the South Lakeland News carries an advert about a new form of heating from Germany.

Loads of hyperbole in the advert - ''a very special form of electric heating'' etc etc. To me these heaters look like (what are probably bloomin expensive to buy) electric radiators?

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't all forms of electric heating essentially 100% efficient at the point of use? So what's the deal with these heaters - are they just hoping to market them to dim wits or am I the dim wit and missing something?

they are magic heaters, and appeal to people who think you can get more energy out (heat) with less energy in (electricity).

They are very good for transferring money from mugs to crooks.

You are correct. Electric heating is 100% efficient. A time clock and thermostat might allow you to use the energy a tad more efficiently but you won't get any more heat per pound out of those grossly expensive radiators than you would a ten quid fan heater.

But think to the future. When we get all our windmills finished we'll be getting free electricity.

Well I don't know, but my understanding of the laws of physics would suggest that 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' so low wattage = low heat

Buy a 100W lamp bulb and stick it inside a metal biscuit tin!

There's no trickery. 1KW in = 1KW of heat out. Every single joule that goes in, in the form of electricity, comes out in the form of heat. So a 1KW light bulb in a biscuit tin produces exactly the same amount of heat as a 1KW super dooper aluminium magnesium oil filled wizzo Italian German Spanish radiator costing eight hundred quid. Don't buy them. They are a con.

We all know that electricity is 100% efficient, but it costs a lot.

That's due to the cost of generating the electricity and the fact that the generation process is not 100% efficient.

1kWHr of gas will supply about 0.90kwHr of useable heat in the house. The power station will consume about 3 times as much gas to produce the same amount of electricity.

So electric heating is, in reality, only 33% efficient.
