Hi all,

I have just joined the site to seek some advice about an issue i am having with my combi boiler, it's a Sabre 29 HE plus.

It has been running well for a couple of years now, however i came in the other night and the red light of death was flashing at me, I reset the boiler and the green light of joy returned,

I checked the hot water and it now works great but when put on the CH the boiler fires up like its about to do the business runs for a bit and then cuts off as if it is convinced the system is hot,

If i put my hand up to where the flow line exits the boiler i can feel heat so water is heating up withing the boiler but not circulating,

My best guess is the diverter valve is jammed (not used much over the summer) so was going to get a replacement cartridge, would you agree with this assessment or am i off the mark?

Any advice much appreciated guys,

Thanks

This is a job for a registered gas engineer.

Contact your local one, costs may vary bit id expect to pay around £200 for this repair 👍

Thanks for the input,

What repair would cost £200?

When i get someone in i would like to have an idea of what i and he is talking about.

You don't need to know anything, your not supposed to know how a boiler works, just like I don't know how finance in the city works. Every man to his own job. Be patient and all will be revealed ! Why do you think the plumber you call won't know what he is doing! That's his job 😉👍

Thanks for the input,

I don't need to know anything? You are correct I do not need to know, however I would like to.

I am not not supposed to know? What do you mean? Is there something wrong with understanding how a boiler works?

Your knowledge outside plumbing must be poor if you and not interested in how anything outside of it works,

Just like every job you will get bad plumbers so while he may know what he is doing it would help if I did,

But thanks again for the advice, hopefully someone else will pop along and add to it,

I will let you know how I get on

You are of course entitled to decide that you suddenly wish to learn about boilers. Though I doubt you gave a flying **** about them before yours developed a fault. Even then most people's interest is only borne out of fear of spending money on it.

Thank you for your constructive comments tibbot, with help like yours I will have it fixed in no time,

I totally agree with your sentiments, anyone is entitled to learn about new things,

Asking questions to those more experienced in a field may one day even be considered as a proactive approach to problem solving.

Will let you know how I get on, you have a great week mate

Asking questions to those more experienced in a field may one day even be considered as a proactive approach to problem solving.

Proactive is having a competent engineer onside for such occasions. Someone who won't cut corners during servicing or just try to sell you a new boiler prematurely.

Many seasoned installers and plumbers are hopeless at boiler fault finding so it's unlikely a DIYer can do so in minutes over the web.

Hi tibbot,

Fortunately I have never had a broken boiler so I don't currently have a competent plumber onside, I will however endeavour to find one, having come across such a helpful gent as yourself so quickly online it fills me with hope that I will find one quickly in the real world also.

I was just looking for a rough idea of what was wrong with my boiler and I think you have been very helpful in that regard,

Thanks again

Hi tibbot,

Good suggestion, i am truely fortunate to have found a competent plumber like yourself online to provide me with these nuggets of wisdom,

I have been trying to contact the the gentleman but have been out of luck so far,

I guess a lot can happen in a year, he may have moved to pastures new, changed his phone or lost an eye while playing with an elastic band,

I work away during the week so thought It was worth investigating while away in order to improve my knowledge of boilers,

Thanks to helpful folk like yourself I feel I am achieving my goal

Thanks again mate, will keep you posted on how I get on

Hi tibbot,

Yes, reading and learning from others are my preferred methods, could you suggest some others I could add to my repertoire, I am open to suggestions from a knowledge bank like yourself,

Thanks mate, will keep you posted on the boiler situation, I feel like I have made I lifelong friend in you

Sabremisery you are playing with forces far beyond your ken. This is no place for enthusiastic amateurs.

DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR BOILER!!!!

Alrighty stool,

Good to hear some fresh ideas,

I think I will get the crowbar, mash hammer, six inch nails and sellotape out at the weekend and get in about it, if stuck I will give you or Ken a shout, but i don't anticipate any problems as I only use precision instruments,

Thanks again maybe me you and my mate tibbot could meet up one time and swap boiler stories?

Cheers mate x x
