I have some very, very large London Plane trees outside my house. They are on the pavement outside my house and so belong to the Council. They really overshadow my house and have the either side of me as well. My light is really diminished. How do I measure the restriction of light as the Council will not pollard them any further.

Ask the council if they have any plans to 'top' them. They probably have an ability on line.
When I lived in N.London, trees were always being pruned.

I see no reason why trees could not injure a right to light but the process is complicated and you will definitely need advice. Use the RICS ‘find a surveyor’ website to find a local chartered surveyor who is experienced in right to light.
