Hi, about to have laminate flooring laid in our bedroom and noticed a weird little cable and attachment under the carpet in the corner of the room (see attached picture).
Does anybody know what this is? Can I remove it? The cables lead under the carpet in our landing towards another bedroom (which has already got new floors a few weeks ago).
It looks very old and ugly and I'm not sure whether this goes under the new floor or should just come out.
Someone I showed it to mentioned it could be from BT?

Just to add, as you can see on the picture the device combines cables not just coming through under the door but there's also a cable coming up through the floorboard

It is a connector for telephone cables. If you remove it I expect that your telephone may not work any longer!

That abomination is unlikely to be BT's work but is highly likely to be your telephone wiring to extension sockets.

Or it could be burglar alarm wiring if you have one (although the wrong sort of cable for that)

Not disagreeing with TTC view but don't telephone wire junction boxes tend to be push fit - rather than screw in.
It could also be a JB for part of an alarm system - if you have one - had one.

They can be either, although IDC is better.

The newer BT ones are push down (IDC) connectors. Older BT ones were screw terminal.
Many of the phone connector JBs that you can buy are screw.
This one
is almost identical to the one in the picture.

And all of those cables are telephone cables. The box is being used as a T point. Alarm cables tend to be point to point.

I suspect the cable coming out of the hole in the floor goes to your Master line Jack / your main telephone point entering the house and the other three are extensions of of it - perhaps to an office for internet and other bedrooms. How many telephone points have you got in your house and do you need them?
