Remember to be there for more than 15 minutes and charge less than £40.

Otherwise he will be an unhappy Wrangler!

It's these type of customers that just made me give up in the end. I went back on the cards as I was sick of people thinking your time is free, or that they are being stung....
My trade is the opposite, commercial refrigeration and a/c. We have to be f-gas registered (which costs money and time) and have thousands of pounds worth of specialist equipment on board. However, we are still expected to work for tuppence!!

Why some on here feel so gifted and self important and consider themselves entitled to charge people exorbitant amounts of money is beyond me and I expect most other reasonable people too. Maybe that is why some people are reluctant to employ an GHE and feel pressured to carry out their own repairs because they simply haven't the money. Which I fully acknowledge is mostly illegal, can be dangerous and even have catastrophic consequences.

Perhaps you are lucky enough never to need to employ a dentist, solicitor or accountant.

But if you did you would find that dentists charge about £200 ph in their workshop which you have to get to.

Solicitors start at about £150 ph and most I come across charge between £300-£400 or more! Again that's in their office which you have to travel to if you want to speak to them face to face.

Accountants appear a little more reasonable! most charge from £80 ph to £160 ph. But what is hidden is that, just like solicitors, most of the work they do for you is done by junior employees on quite normal salaries.

But all of these people are doing the work at THEIR premises.

Travelling to customers is usually a significant proportion of the working day and so has to be covered from the chargeable parts of the work.

Tony
Think we can all agree the 'suits' are generally well known for taking the pizz. They are part of the protected ruling class sharks. Legalised thieves mostly and another industry that needs serious restructuring. Yours was a poor comparison imo and perhaps a more realistic one is a mechanic for instance
tho tbf some of their hourly rates are obscene especially on high end cars imo. Independent garages are generally more realistic.

I'm not saying good ghe should work for peanuts, far from it. Most of you are no doubt very skilled and deserve a good wage..It's just a shame there's so many rouges about.

What is charged is not what engineers earn. That is what you seen to misunderstand. You obviously have no concept of operating costs.

Even for a relatively small company like mine our monthly costs are eye watering.

You'll never win with some people.
I had a classic maybe 3-4 years ago where I just ended up arguing with the client. This was when I was managing a company.
The client was a dentist surgery,,,,,,,,,,,

I was quoting to fit a/c.
I made the visit and sent a quote, which they immediately questioned.
They asked our hourly rate, which at the time was about £35. They thought this was high...
I got annoyed and asked them to justify THEIR hourly rate, which pretty much worked out to be £150+
They gave the reasons as the amount of time it takes to train to be a dentist, equipment and premises costs etc.

I then explained that our premises was about 5 x the size of theirs, engineers took the same time to train, they all drove a £20k van with circa £5k of equipment and stock on each. AND we go to them and not vice versa. They still didn't get that in reality our hourly rate was actually very low in retrospect.
Just to ram the point home. On the site visit, I parked in the dentists private car park. Guess what?, the only cars were Porsche and Merc's - so of course they are not taking the pee on charges.....

In a nutshell..
There are many out there who think it's fine for them to charge / earn a fortune, but YOU are not allowed to do the same. Double standards..

Hmmmm. And yet when you slated the cooker guy, you made no mention of client dissatisfaction withh the work completed - apart from the £££'s. And he wasn't even makimg a particularly "ggod" wage.

Huh? She was dissatisfied with what he charged her, thought that was abundantly clear. So you think £40 for 30 mins of this mans time is ok? That's roughly £500 a day!

That old lady earning a basic state pension of £115 wk has to live on that for about a month!

Yet again you think the amount charged is the amount earnt. Fool.
You're coming across as a bit slippery if you don't mind me saying. If you're paid on a paye salary do you take home what you earn?
Everyone has deductions, fella.

Even though we have pointed it out to you several times, the engineer has to drive to the area, find the property, find somewhere to park, sometimes pay a meter and all that takes time. In London I find that it is usually at least 30 minutes if not held up.

Going to see a friend leaving at 1430, a 25 minute journey actually took over 3 hours! Two serious traffic problems both mentioned on traffic news but unavoidable, third just a local delay.

But that was an early afternoon which is usually the quietest time of day on the roads.

And some have costs to deduct before they're personal deductions. Slippery has nothing to do with it.
