Electric heaters - what would you reccomend?

Hi guys,

We're building a garden cabin 6.5 meters x 4.5 and we're looking for suggestions on the best electric heaters. Ive been looking at haverland but was wondering if anyone can recommend another make or solution please? I used the haverland calculator which suggested I get 2 x RC12B's - is this a little over kill?

Heating requirements depend on the heat loss of the building, same as for any other.

Unless you really wanted to throw £600 away on those Haverland things, then one of these: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4154017.htm
would do just as well. If after using it in the winter it does not output enough heat, you could buy a second one.

Thanks that's probably not a bad idea to be fair. Even just go with a smaller mains wired electric heater which kicks out say 1000w and then add if required.

I appreciate these are an expensive brand - do you know of any others?

Other expensive brands: Rointe, Fischer, any other 'German' heater filled with magic super clay.

Guys, excuse my stupidity but.... You can get panel 2kW heaters for £200 and you can get convection 2kW heaters for £20 - how do they differ as obviously they are both 2kW?

You want a split unit heat pump. 2.5 times cheaper running cost;

unless its super insulated you will need at least 3kw possibly more

Hi,
It is proper insulated with 50mm celotex and then insulation on top of that we then have ply and plasterboard. I did the calculations based on the size which came back 1.8kW so 1.5 to start with should be fine.

you need it to be greater than the heat loss otherwise you will be stuck around 15 degrees on cold cold cold days
if its occasional use with heating off overnight you would be better off with 3kw plus thermostatically controlled that will get to temperature quicker then turn off wasting less energy warming up

They differ in price only - both will use the same amount of electricity and give you the same amount of heat. Buy the cheap ones

i prefer fan heaters for more direct aiming
basically you enter the cold space aim the fan heater at the area you are sitting at or using most so you get full benefit off the heat as it gradually spreads to the colder areas
for long unattended times [more than around 10 mins] or with kids or animals i would avoid a fan heaters unless out off reach as they can get very hot iff airflow is restricted
yes they have protection to stop problems and should be fine but would hate the 1% chance to happen to you

i actually leave my argos £12 fan heater unattended on frost setting over night but it sits on top off my woodburner so if it did fail or catch fire it would simply melt untill it blew a fuse as theres nothing flamable within 2ft sideways and 4ft vertically
