electrician quote

Morning guys

just had a quote back from a electrician, we have a detached garage and he quoted as follows:

1x 5 foot single light fitting
1x double socket
1x garage circuit board
steel wire armoured cable back to house
d.p switch inside house

all for £275

we will be digging up the trench in the garden, roughly 10-15 feet from house to garage.

i just wanted to know if this price is reasonable?

Hard to say, without seeing the site, etc. But its a days work plus paperwork, notification, materials, VAT??

So I would say it is fair.

Things I would want clarification on
1. Is he a registered electrician
2. The price includes an installation certificate and notification to his CPS scheme
3. This DP switch in the house. I assume this is a fuse as well as a switch?

PS If all that you need in the garage is a double socket and a light then a "garage circuit board" is not strictly necessary. He could run the SWA straight into the socket and just have a 3amp FCU as the light switch.... That would save you the cost of the Garage Consumer Unit..

yes hes registered, the price does include a installation certificate, not sure about notification to his CPS scheme, to be honest not sure what that is.
Again not sure if the switch is fused these are all questions i can now put to him and get back to you. We will be running a spare fridge freezer in the garage as the one in the house is tiny, so im wondering maybe thats why hes suggested garage circuit board?

No, he has suggested the garage circuit board because he has not thought it through.

Where is this double pole switch in the house fed from? The feed should be a separate 20A MCB in the CU.

ok, i will go through what you have explained to me with him hopefully he pays more thought, he did kinda rush, the feed is coming from the CU under the stairs.

A consumer unit in the garage allows you to separate the sockets and lights properly, and gives you better RCD discrimination. It's a much better design than not having one.

Is Taylortwocities an electrician? He originally suggested a garage CU was not necessary.

Incidentally how does a CU give better RCD discrimination?

Because you can have more than one RCD or non-RCD circuits. This really is the most basic of electrical theory.

Is the garage insulated? The fridge freezer may defrost in the winter if its too cold. Check the climate class of the appliance. Better luck with a single freezer and single fridge rather than a fridge freezer
