You're a shopkeeper.

A thief comes in your store and steals £100 from the register without you knowing.

He then returns and buys £70 worth of merchandise with that stolen £100, and you give him back £30 as change.

How much are you out of pocket?

A. £30

B. £70

C. £100

D. £130

E. £170

F. £200

He doesn't need to, it's C. The thief stole £100, so that's the loss. The fact that the thief came back in and bought some goods is immaterial.

no its not because the goods have a value

But it would be the same transaction whether the thief, or a normal customer bought them. This is the red herring part of the puzzle. The thief stole £100, and that's the only true loss.
