I did - but most likely naively. The top was Common, L1, L2 and the bottom was Common, L1 and L2 I just patched them as is to the dimmer (I labelled them for brevity and my sanity). I'll give it a go in a couple of days when I get some time. One switch controls the hall lights and the other the stairs and upper landing - the stairs and upper landing can be switched off and on from the upper landing floor

The Dimmer is on the ground floor. It's a old Victorian House with a dog leg stairs which has a light on it and you can see it from the downstairs hallway

Yes. But why would you want to dim the lights on a dangerous place like the stairs?

The light in the stairs is on a crook and it is very bright - also there is a huge window which lets in natural light - I'll take a pic when I am home and you'll be able to see it better

So, put a lower power bulb in it.

No natural light after dark however big the window.
