Hi all. I'm fitting a shower lite extractor in mother I laws shower cubicle. Is it OK to take power from fcu in loft which I feeding 1 of those condensation extractor things. Meaning it'll be a spur from lighting to fcu then 3A fcu to showerlite

Yes.

The FCU isn't really necessary.
Although the manufacturer might say it is.

It must have an RCD on the circuit.

Yeah it's all rcd protected at consumer unit.
So just wire in to the fcu that's already in loft. Into same terminals as mains cable?

In case you don't know, and would prefer to:

If you live in England or Wales and the light is going into a bathroom Zone then you are supposed to apply for Building Regulations approval in advance, or use a registered electrician.

Wish I'd known that before ban....save me a lot of work. Simple tiling job turned into a ficking big job. She'd removed most of the tiles, 2 walls I had to take back to brick and dot and dab moisture plasterboard on, the other was a built stud which was more bent than graham Norton and Alan Carr combined. It had a shower isolator which also had the wire for the light and extractor in. 2 core and earth to extractor with a single red core next to it acting as 3 core an earth cable. As for the shower door she picked...god I'd sooner read war and peace in Braille than them instructions.

You don't need the FCU. FCU's are not required or used on lighting circuits. A 3a fuse in a FCU will have no discrimination against a 6a MCB in your CU. A loft is a stupid place to have a FCU.

I agree stupid place for a fcu. I've only taken power from the 1 in loft. Fed it down into her bedroom in trunking to where the 3a switched fcu is wall mounted.
I guess the 3a fcu is for maintenance purposes only then? Is was on manufacturers installation instructions.

So you have a FCU fed from another FCU fed from the lighting circuit. Neither are required as there will be no discrimination with the 6a MCB in your CU. If there is a fault you will probably have 2 blown fuses and a tripped MCB. FCUs are not used or required on lighting circuits.

Manufacturers instructions are for guidance only and don't have to be followed, especially when they are wrong. Ask them what they recommend in the vast majority of countries where FCUs are not available or compliant.

Same old guff, Winny.
How does one know when they are wrong?

BTW, can I refer you to 559.6.1.1 (vii)? (From the green book)

Indeed. In fact, even if/when what he writes is strictly true, no-one is forced to take his comments seriously.

Kind Regards, John

Just been chatting to Manrose Technical.

Their euro installation instructions advise a 3A fuse and DP isolator with 3mm contact gap.
