What type of putty do I use for a single glaze glass and double glazed glass?

I note there are different type e.g. linseed oil putty and butyl putty?

How long do you have to leave it before you can paint or stain over it?

Any decent brands recommended?

What are you trying to achieve?

Putty isnt normally used on double glazing, as it should be drained and vented (apart from slim lite heritage glazing)

Single glazing can be face puttied with linseed or butyl. Its not easy to to though.

I have a timber framed porch with single glazed glass i need to re stain. Some of the putty (im assuming its putty) is not in great shape eg cracking and coming off.

I've only ever used linseed oil putty. Like with anything, there's a knack to doing a neat job. You do get a putty knife, looks like a odd shaped scraper.

I think they usually say on the tub to leave for atleast 4-6 weeks before painting.
