I need to replace a handful of ridge tile cement and don't want to buy a 10kg bag ... can I use the sand from the beach ?

Happily took a bucket from the beach when short for a concrete mix recently. Easier than 15 mile round trip to builders' merchant. Probably not strictly allowed - aren't beaches owned by Crown Estate or something? Up to a point at least?
I built an extension with the grains brushed off from between our toes and off our backs from our days on the beach.
It took 20 years and 872 holidays to Devon, but it was worth it.
It took some convincing of the inspector to accept the the driftwood I used for rafters, but he came round in the end.
Only issue is all the bloody seagulls hovering around - and we're 120 miles from the coast, FFS.

A 20kg bag of sharp sand is £3....... I want you to coach me on frugality. I thought I was the biggest tight wad on the forum but this is brilliant. Sadly I’m in the West Midlands so have no beaches nearby otherwise with your idea, the locals would have found a crater on their beach when they woke up. I could then have buried my foundation spoil in it. I wonder if I could use sea water in the mix?

Yeah I can actually afford the price of a caramel-sharp-sand-cappuccino but what do I do with the 9.5kg that I don't use .... I have to carry all this stuff on my bike ? Suppose I can dump it on the beach, there are too many pebbles round here anyway.

Is the salt a problem ? Beach sand is going to be a bit salty ... from the sea isn't it ?

Patience, patience - you could have saved yourself £2.36.
In true DIY fashion, you could have put a sandcastle bucket full of sand into a pillow case and rinsed it a few times with a hose or in a rubber dingy full of water and then perhaps filtered the sand through a cotton jumper or suchlike to remove debris and get mostly pure clean grains.
BTW there are many old buildings up and down the country where if you look at the mortar closely you see tiny shells or shell fragments.
