I just knew she wasn't going to look ........13/14 year old girl walked straight out in front of me between some parked cars.....I stopped with her literally 10 inches from the front end in the middle of the car.

Gave her a right blast on the horn and she jumped out of her skin she was completley oblivious to my presence, not out of anger but to shock her in to looking the next time she crosses the road. I felt good because if I hadn't anticipated she was going to walk straight out in to the road she would have been under the car.

I know my actions saved her from being knocked down and it felt good !

I nearly ran over a young girl 6 months ago. She ran out from behind a van trying to beat her gran back to the house. The first I saw of her was when she stepped out. Good job I'm A tootler. Propper shook me up though. Didnt feel good at all. Twas Rob Rock's (golfer) niece.

Edited: niece.

Happens all of the time at my local Aldi.

Yesterday, a gormless overweight woman waddled out of the shop, past the trollies, and straight into the path of the cars. My car, as it happened.

Wouldn't be quite so bad if they walked out perpendicular to the roadway - at least they might have the benefit of peripheral vision - but they walk almost parallel to the roadway, with their backs to the oncoming cars, and carry on that route as they wander in front of the next car.

Lackwits.

Wait til her family or mates slash your tyres.Has to be something between her ears to learn from that.I would not bank on it!Surprised you did not hear"fek off idiot, can ya not drive"

Best is when they shout "Slow down!", when they haven't a clue that you were there at all, let alone what speed you were doing.

or "Watch where you're going!"; the irony of it.

Sadly, I knocked down an 11 year old in 1990. He didn't look either. Luckily, apart from a bruised hip, he was fine.
His mother, who was a teacher at his primary school, screamed at him, "HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT THE GREEN CROSS FU*KING CODE??"

The police arrived extremely quickly, didn't breath test me and measured up the skid marks (both sets ) and said I wasn't speeding and I was free to go.
My insurance company suspended my NCD, for what turned out to be 10 years.

The real kick in the arse was that I rang the hospital to see how he was doing.
"Who's calling?" asked the nurse.
"The driver"
"He's fine, no thanks to you."

I refrained from telling her that he was "fine" because I was driving carefully and attentively. I wasn't driving with my eyes shut, but he might as well have been crossing the road with his shut.

Had to pay a £20 fee for the ambulance too! Not sure how that works!

In the car park? I think don't the pedestrians always have the right of way?

The most annoying is when you are reversing and people are just walking behind your car and it's your job to stop and let them pass. Anyone without reversing cameras and sensors will have fun!

Yes.
And a fat lot of use it is to them, if they get a broken leg / wrecked knee / brain injury etc etc

Being "in the right" isn't always the right place to be.

Have we already evolved to the point whereby we no longer have the capability to swivel our heads and look behind us when in control of a vehicle?

Forget the technology - anyone who is incapable of doing so should no longer be driving!

I think this is definitely a British peculiarity. In the states, it's the car that seems to have the right in car parks. I see people more respectful of cars in the US than over here.

But what if you are in a Van or you have reduced visibility and can only use your wing mirrors?

What have people always done in such a situation?

Fixation on a backward looking screen usually ignores the benefits of peripheral vision.

Technology may be an aid, but too much reliance on it dumbs down the important 'squidgy bit' behind the wheel!

Unless of course you don't believe that experience gives you a bit of a 'sixth sense' as to what someone is about to do?
