Is PSE suitable for simple sturdy shelves?

I need to put some shelves up. Budget is tight. Local timber yard sells
2" x 9" (50mm x 225mm) PSE for £7.56 per m.

Would a sand and varnish be all that's needed for some sturdy shelves?

It would work fine if its redwood/pine not spruce/whitewood -which is used for carcassing and is lower grade

Bear in mind 2 x 9 redwood will cup and there will be splits along the middle probably.

thanks, I've asked ... let's hope it's the good stuff.

reply just come in: "This is Softwood Joinery grade Redwood
This can be used for shelving"

scaffold boards are cheaper and will be 9" rather than nearer 210mm

joinery grade softwood is redwood, pinus sylvestris. Joinery grade usually means unsorted (a mix of the top 4 grades) or more commonly these days 5ths (a bit more knotty). Which is fine for shelves, just bear in mind 50 x 225 may well have splits around the middle and will definitely cup (you can tell how it will cup, the smiley face will try and straighten up!)
