Restore my lawn

Hi,

I laid my turf around 5 months ago and as expected, it looked splendid. It settled in I feel as we had plenty of rain for a period.

However, with the prolonged hot weather, it's looking very tired and brown in places. Is there a easy fix for this or do I just need to wait for more rain? I can't get the stripes, for some reason, the lawnmover inst collecting the grass like it was before and its getting a bit depressing...

Should I be piercing it with a fork in places, do I need to spread some feed, etc. When should I be doing this?

At this time of year you need one that is for autumn use, that will have a lower nitrogen content. In the link Andy gave one has NPK rations of 12 / 2 / 4 and another has NPK rations of 3 / 1 / 3. The latter is what I would use.

Nitrogen encourages growth of the grass blades so in spring / summer you want a higher nitrogen content for plenty of growth. In autumn you don't want the blades to grow so much but you do want to encourage root growth, so you want a lower %age of nitrogen.

should I spread it out just before rain?

Depends on the product. Some say to spread on dry grass (so the granules drop to the ground rather than sticking to grass blades) and water in if does not rain in a few days, some say there is no need to water in and some are dissolved in water and spread that way.

Just getting around to this...I re-seeded some brown patches which has helped but my lawn is still not looking like it originally did when first turfed.

Is this still the right product for this time of the year?

After Cut can only be used from March onwards, the clue is in the title 'After Cut'.

When the weather is cold the grass will be dormant*, so there is no point in adding anything as it will not be taken up and used until the weather warms and the grass starts growing properly again. When the weather does warm up then anything you add will be taken up quickly.

* The colder the less activity. If the ground is frozen then nothing will be happening, if the weather is merely cool then it probably will be growing but very slowly.
