Do you think I need some new discs and pads?

There are days when I think the new "Dangerous - do not drive" MOT fail category is an unnecessary intervention by the Nanny State.

...and then there are days when....

Rsgaz,
At first I was shocked at that image, but looking at it closely I see it as a fake as the rotor/disk has been ground down for a bigger area (towards the central axis) than the size of the caliper and pads. And no polished surfaces on these areas either.

Curiously, I have seen a disc that had parted from its hub.....HB Viva with non vented discs. The caliper sliders had seized so all pressure was on one face of the disc - hence the result!

I see it as a fake

I don't know TBH. But, to me, the pad looks crooked. Pushed outward at the top could mean inward at the bottom, like...

Concealed by the camera angle unfortunately.

Rsgaz,
Perhaps, and i would like to believe that as it makes for a brilliant picture if real.

But I would have also expected the pads and caliper to have suffered an equal amount of wear as the disk.
Perhaps owner was hyper-diligent and replaced the pads every few days to save the caliper but kept forgetting do the disk. /s :>

The disc has been turned on a lathe....you can see the tool marks. Good pic though!
If the disc had worn like that, there would be nowt left of the caliper, never mind the pad!
John :)

That pad has effectively cut away half of the disc.....Ive seen disasters where the pad has actually disappeared or has at least become wafer thin!
I would have thought that the caliper piston would be almost out at that point.
Who knows -true or fake its a great pic. I dont recognise the make of pad or caliper, and the track rod end has a grease nipple. American, probably!
John :)

I think it's PROBABLY real. I also think someone has started to take the caliper off and then decided to take a photo - hence the pad being out of line. And yes, the piston must be practically dropping out!

I guess we'll never know- not that it really matters!
My thinking is for a disc to be as worn as that, the pad back would be long gone. It's not as if the discs are particularly soft.
John :)

Anyone notice the similarities in the caliper and pad, looks like this is both sides of the same car, you can see the track rod to the left of the bottom disc with the caliper being at the front of both pics

Well spotted that man! (y)
Notice on the bottom picture, the disc has backed off from the hub yet we can't see any signs of disassembly.
John :)
