Does this stone wall need extensive re-pointing?

Hi

This wall could probably do with some TLC! Do all the gaps need (lime?) mortar put in? Theres a few gaps where stone has fallen out.

Unfortuantely money is very tight. Can I ask a builder to 'just do the worst bits' or will that look odd? How much per metre do you think it would be to re-point?

Find a stone mason, not a general builder. Ask for a quote.

Looks like a dry stone wall to me, no pointing required if it is.

Hmm, still looks like DSW to me .

Maybe the wall is in such need of repair all the mortar has fallen out a long time ago! Ill take some close-ups tomorrow.

Definately not a dry stone wall. ( Unless it was a beginner's first attempt with very unsuitable stone )

Looks typical of the walls in my area. Many of them built by farmers in the past using local materials, hence the really big joints, rather than the smaller joints that a stonemason would use. I've repaired a few like yours for farmers, as car drivers tend to claim damages off them if any stones are lying around in the road.
Don't think you have to use a stonemason, as the original wall looks like it was roughly built to start with. Main thing is to get the joints filled and some of the stones put back to stop the wall falling apart.

Maybe it was built by Billy the builder from Berks. At least the top is coping with weather and time.
