Best Car For Newly Qualified Driver

Not a new driver, but I started a new job this week and needed a car (I have been either working from home or walking to work for the last 10 years!).
I wanted something cheap, cheap to run, cheap to tax, cheap to insure. Bought a mate's mum's Hyundai i10. It's a great little car. Nippy at lower speeds, gets up to 80mph without a problem too.
About £30 tax, £200 insurance (got a fair few years no claims, plus an oldie now!).
 
Been looking at a variety of Vauxhalls with that engine.

Astras are up to £400 more to insure than a Meriva.

Corsas are no cheaper and are smaller.

Have looked at Hyundais and Kias, mostly the Ceed estates.

I'm trying to look for something a bit bigger which would be less of a tin can in a smash. Estates are a good way of adding a little bit of metal behind you.

close 1980 model

C3 third generation corvette 5.7 chevrolet . mpg is around 18 to the gallon (ish) got another more powerful engine for it , when I get around to fitting it eventually.

she has not got the get up and go of the transam but then its a smaller engine
 
If you have journey's of under 50 miles each way and corporate charging stations at work, you cannot beat a Nissan Leaf for value (provided you buy one which include the battery, some are leased). These are very cheap second hand and pennies to run.

For a young driver apart from waiting another year for the price to drop Skoda Fabia's come up repeatedly for being cheap to insure.
