I think it’s generally accepted that people tend think of the leader, party and manifesto when voting. So yes they should resign but they won’t and neither would I in their shoes.

When the matter was brought up in parliament the the home office minister in charge claimed that the bloke from the Israeli embassy was only a junior operative acting on his own behalf.
What would the reaction be if an official from the Russian embassy was caught in an undercover sting tapping up British politicians.

You omit to mention what the funding was for.
