I know it's old news, but I came across this recently:

Did they prosecute the eaters for cruelty to animals, perhaps?

No, disorderly behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

I'm veggie, but even I would not feel harassed, alarmed or distressed at watching someone eat meat.

Would they have prosecuted the pair for standing there eating a meat pastie?

There have been a wave of 'vegan protests' in restaurants in various towns/cities including where they have shown videos of slaughter in front of diners, including children ...

And yet no prosecutions for said actions, save when there is 'public disorder - usually when a 'corporate' is targeted!
 
I have a friend who is vegetarian on ethical grounds - she claims she heard some cows crying at an abattoir years ago when they knew what was going to happen to them. She’s been veggie for about 30 years now. We both help out at the local shoot where we take our dogs to do a bit of flushing. When I ask her how, as an ethical veggie, she could be involved in the shoot and she says that the pheasants have lived a full and natural life right up until the moment they are shot. She’s got no problem with it as they end up on the table and it’s not just for sport.

What does she suppose the cackling noise is when the startled pheasant take flight? Laughter?

A better defence could have beaten that charge. Not saying people should go around eating raw squirrels.

A pastie is hardly the same as a cute, fur covered critter is it? People don't like the truth of eating meat and don't get offended so much when it's tidily wrapped up neat in a dish.

I'd have hated to see someone eat a squirrel like that but then am fond of squirrels!
 
Not sure I entirely agree with you on that point! But leaving that out, there's no denying the greys were not a native species and the population is getting out of control. Bit like pigeons.

As a nation, those who eat meat should eat more pigeon and (grey) squirrel. That would keep the numbers in check and at the same time would reduce the need for intensive meat farming.

Would we just meat farm squirrels instead? I don't suppose it's easy to catch em wild to eat, meaning farming them is the economic way and does little to control the numbers out in the wild.

People should just try eating less meat, better for the animals, better for the environment. Healthier too.

PS, I get annoyed by the squirrel debate. Humans bring em in then get blamed because they're immune to the pox virus. Humans then cut down all the trees and food source that reds rely on and the greys get blamed because they're adaptable to what they will eat to survive unlike the reds. Humans cause stress and lack of good environment for the reds to thrive and then the reds don't reproduce in those conditions, unlike the greys. Basically the greys have evolved better, stronger and because of that, they're hated.

Did you know that it's not so long ago that reds were culled in massive numbers because they were considered a pest? The demise of the reds is down to humans and our love of interfering with animals.
 
Ive just asked my wife if we could have a squirrel pigeon casserole for dinner.

Unfortunately I find myself unable to repeat the response verbatum.
