Whilst looking at a problem with the heating I have noticed the following:

I am not sure what its purpose is. Here is a wider picture of the pipework:

What are the two pipes that go up to the loft?

Also, looking at the HW tank there is another pipe from close to the top - on the right here. This goes up into the loft

It may be a feed to the shower but I have yet to go up in the loft to have a look. Is there another particular use for it?

Some of this may e crystal ball gazing but it will kill my curiosity

The little round silver box looks like an air separator, and the 2 pipes off it will be flow and return. The one with the gatevalve on last photo does appear to be for a shower, but has a back fall, so you may get trapped air in that.

Looks like it's an air separator for the feed and vent, one pipe is the cold water feed from the F+E tank in the loft the other is the expansion back up and whoever did that obviously had shares in JG ;)

This shows why DIY plumbing should not be allowed!

Not DIY unfortunately! The house was built in 2000 and the plumbers used the wrong flux (apparently) as told by a neighbor. Some owners settled for a cash payment and others went for a re-plumb. The only downside was that plastic piping was to be used rather than copper! Not sure which I like better but it was like this when I bought the house in 2008

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah must have been a cheap, really quick re-pipe. It's not strictly wrong, it's normally just a glaringly DIY'd job, or in this case not a very good professional job.

It's a Myson Aerjec II a pointless device that causes more problems than it solves.
I'm amazed the speedfit joints onto the Aerjec aren't leaking...the pipe end forming at the joint is of reduced diameter and the grab rings may not fully engage.
Google and you'll see what I mean.

Could that be because, as in the current example, it has not been fitted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions?
